France has been taking jaywalking prevention very seriously lately. With the help of 'Serviceplan,' sensors have been placed near several major crossings in Paris that set off the sound of a car screeching to a halt when a pedestrian crossed on a red light. In most cases, the jaywalker became instantly fearful for their life. A camera would then take a photo of the person terrified face and post it to a billboard located near the crossing. Across the photo, a message reads: "Don’t take the risk of staring death in the face. Respect the traffic lights when you cross the road." Serviceplan has since posted images of terrified jaywalkers on its website to bring greater awareness to road safety.
This jaywalking prevention method may seem dramatic, but in Paris alone, nearly 400 pedestrians are hit by vehicles every year.
