A Japanese railway company has invented a bizarre technology that has the potential to save hundreds of lives each year.
The West Japan Railway Company, better known as JR West, is introducing a drunken commuter cam that can identify when a passenger is inebriated. If a passenger waiting for a train displays behaviors such as lingering on a bench for too long or weaving back and forth across the platform, the surveillance system will automatically flag them and alert an attendant. Japanese railway employees can then assist the customer in order to prevent any harm from coming to them.
In 2013 alone, 221 Japanese railway passengers were hit by trains, with 60% of these incidents caused by technology. This unusual development in surveillance technology may therefore stop hundreds of Japanese railway accidents from ever happening.
