Tokyo-based designer Iwamoto brings his desired concept of transforming a mass-produced material into a piece of artwork to fruition with his latest plastic blown vases. Iwamoto blends together the traditional manufacturing process of glass blowing with PVC pipes often used for plumbing purposes. He first heats up the plastic pipes over a heater for up to 20 minutes until it softens and becomes a consistency that resembles rubber. He follows that by placing the pipe over a wooden mold and blowing to inflate it, similar to the glass blowing process. This creates an indenting pattern design on the vase's surface.
Iwamoto's PVC pipe vases are currently being showcased at the Milan design week venue, Ventura Future, as a part of a display section entitled Ex-Portation.
