Steve Jobs unveiled at WWDC that iPhone Firmware 2.0 will be out in July free of charge for iPhone owners. On the other hand, iPod touch owners will have to shell out $9.95 to upgrade.
New features include contact search functions, bulk delete and edit of email / SMS, support for iWork documents (including Keybote) and enhanced Office doc support, parental controls, a scientific calculator, as well as new abilities to save images from email to the photo library.
Another important addition is the Push Notification services which provide notification for applications that require it, such as instant messaging. The mechanism saves battery life, solves performance issues and works over the wireless and the cell networks.
The upgrade brings support for many Latin-based languages, two forms of Japanese and two forms of Chinese, and the ability to draw characters using fingers.
The iPhone App Store will also expand from 22 countries to 62 countries.
