The robotic tennis ball camera, created by Boston-based Company Bouncing Image, is the ultimate solution to solving both safety issues and saving time all in one go. For when there is an emergency involved, time is of the most importance.
This simplistic yet ingenuous device provides a great way to help figure out whether or not it is safe to enter a building. Equipped with six cameras, the device operates by throwing it into the uncertain area. While the ball bounces, the cameras then work to capture two photographs per second and wirelessly transfers the information to a laptop, which is able to re-create a full 360-degree panoramic view of the area. Even in poorly lit areas the robotic tennis ball works its magic by using infrared LEDs to provide a clearer image.
The creator Francisco Aguilar came up with the idea after the Haiti earthquakes in 2010. He saw a need for a device that could safely inspect damaged buildings.
Winning one of Time magazine's best inventions in 2012, it has large hopes in becoming a well used tool for all relief workers. The robotic tennis ball camera may still be a prototype but it is expected to begin testing in the beginning of the New Year.
