In-flight Internet service provider Gogo has demonstrated its cutting-edge technology that makes it possible to use phones on planes at an altitude above 10,000 feet.
The demonstration was one of the highlights of the technology conference being held at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. In an ingenious promotional stunt, Gogo teamed up with Keith's Barbecue to repurpose a Challenger 600 corporate jet as an airborne food truck where people could grab a bite and test the in-flight calling and WiFi systems.
To use the system, users have to put their phone in airplane mode before connecting to the airplane's Gogo WiFi network. The Gogo app is then used to send and receive calls and texts. Gogo plans to bring texting services to U.S. commercial flights later this year.
