It might look like a still from the popular video game 'Portal,' but international architecture and design firm Snohetta's infinite ladder illusion of the same name is entirely real. The art piece, which is on display at Wallpaper magazine's Holy Handmade exhibition for Milan design week, features a ladder that appears to extend endlessly both upward and downward.
Snohetta achieved its infinite ladder illusion thanks to the clever use of mirrors. Two finely polished circular mirrors are appended to the top and bottom of a length of black, upholstered ladder. Since the mirrors are perfectly parallel to one another, they reflect the opposing mirror and the ladder alone. Thus, from virtually any angle, it looks to a spectator as though the ladder extends through a circular portal ad infinitum.
