British lighting designer Bruce Munro takes the humble garden lighting idea to a whole new level of artistry with his Field of Light sculptures. His latest installation will be at the Eden Project in Cornwall, England where it can be viewed for the coming winter. How lovely to see a landscape covered with his lights!
Munro’s installation usually involves thousands of acrylic tubes topped with bulbs. Optical fibers inside are lit via an external projector so each tube does not carry any electrical power. At the Eden project, some 6,000 tubes will be used to cover 60 x 20 meters, using 24,000 meters of fibre in total!
Bruce Munro was inspired 15 years ago when he visited the Australian desert. He was charmed by the sudden appearance of desert blooms after a rainstorm. Munro was also equally intrigued with the strange oasis-like sculptures that randomly adorned the roadside campsites--like a giant banana or pineapple. His Field of Light projects certainly bloom in the barren darkness of night.
Next year, Munro will be installing a massive illuminated maze which will be synchronized with choral music called Water Towers. It will be exhibited at Rook Lane Arts in Frome.
