Activities other than jogging or walking are banned on the public median in Santa Monica. Violators are subject to arrest.
In response to the 1500 or so exercise buffs who come to use the city’s median and other public amenities as outdoor gym space each weekend, Santa Monica is enforcing a 1970 ordinance that prohibits gathering on, or use of, the public median except for ‘moving along.’
One of the big draws to the area is a stairway with 172 steps. It’s listed on the Internet as an exercise destination. Personal trainers use the stairs with their clients.
There are cities whose residents would take pride in their reputation as an exercise paradise, but some in Santa Monica find it inconvenient. They want the exercisers stopped.
The YouTube video above explores the issue in depth. The CBS video below gives a good overview and update.
