Unilever has announced a new trial that involves raising the temperature of ice cream freezer cabinets in several retail environments in a bid to reduce energy use and curb greenhouse gas emissions.
The initiative will be trialed in Germany and Indonesia where the freezers will be set to -12-degrees Celsius instead of the industry standard -18-degrees Celsius. This will keep frozen novelties at the right level of coldness, while helping to reduce energy usage by a significant percentage.
President of Ice Cream at Unilever Matt Close spoke on the new initiative saying, "We’re actively seeking to collaborate with partners from across the ice-cream and frozen food sectors to drive industry-wide change, so the collective positive impact is far greater."
