Surrealistic Animal Portraits

Alice Wellinger's human animal hybrid art brings the viewer into an eerie fantastical world. Each of her pieces features a human mixed with an animal, either as a hybrid or by some bizarre interaction. One piece shows a boxer fighting a supersize rooster. The image is in sepia tones, save for the bright-red boxing gloves and cherry-red rooster comb. The identical colors of these two objects draws attention to the two creatures’ similarities. The piece as a whole combines human boxing and rooster righting which makes a statement about the needless brutality of both activities.

Another portrait shows a woman’s face lying still in a bathtub. The face takes up the entire length of the tub and isn’t attached to a body. This makes for a surreal, Dali-esque work that causes the viewer stop and stare. By defying the laws of nature, physics and chemistry in all of her works, Wellinger has created an entirely fantastical world where anything is possible. For her world to make sense, the pieces have to be analyzed carefully and looked over with a sensitive eye. If the viewer isn't paying attention, they might just miss some powerful messages.
