Shipping containers are being reused in increasingly creative ways, from tea houses to homeless housing solutions. These containers in particular are being used to address the issue of homelessness in the UK city of Brighton.
The City of Brighton Housing Trust in collaboration with QED Property aim to help the area's homeless population with a block of 36 apartments made from one shipping container. Standing six containers high by six wide, the complex contains flats that include a kitchen, bathroom and furnished studio/living area. Retailer Homebase provided the starter package of furnishings, such as a bed, wardrobe and cabinets.
Originally intended for an Amsterdam project, the homeless housing solution came to Brighton. The blocks cost less than standard apartments as well, but do not provide a permanent solution.
