While former Editorial Intern Jason Soy discusses hilarious video game reviews, you can tell he has a great sense of humor. This shines through during his interview, particularly when he ironically states that his favorite accomplishment is his humble nature despite all of his accomplishments. All joking aside, Soy also shares some insightful and uncommon tidbits as to how he resets to be creative, and how he leads with and deeply admires passion.
What is your favorite trend and why?
My favorite trend is hilarious video game reviews. It all started out with this one dude called angry video game nerd. He posted up videos of him ranting about how certain video games suck. Eventually a bunch of other Internet personalities started picking up on the format and ran with it. One of my favorite examples of this is a new series called Game grumps. They are supposed to be giving insightful commentary but all they do is joke around.
How do you define cool?
I define cool as anything that's destructive to the norm. When you're in a classroom and you see one person walk in and all their eyes are on them, that's something cool.
What is your secret to uncovering the best trends?
My secret to uncovering trends is to be passionate about what you are looking for. I follow a list of blogs that cater to my interests, which usually involve digital art.
How do you reset to be creative?
Rather then resetting to be creative, I suggest you should just fight through it. You'll find that the struggle helps you become way more creative. Often times, those moments when you are the most delirious after thinking about a concept for a really long time is when you find a really cool way to present the idea you were thinking about.
What is your favorite accomplishment?
My favorite accomplishment is being so humble despite accomplishing so many things.
What inspires or excites you?
What really inspires me is passionate people who are also talented. People who are willing to devote their time and effort to a cause. Whether it's origami or anything that they are super passionate about.
Imagine something awesome for 2020?
A trend I foresee happening in the future is interactive movies. I feel like a lot of people will be going to the movie theatres. Rather then just giving people a set story line, more people are going to be able to interact.
What advice do you have for the business world?
My advice to the business world is to jump on any platform as soon as it comes out. Don't wait for it to become popular before you try to utilize it in a creative way. Once people start jumping on the bandwagon it will be way too saturated for it to be effective. As soon as you see a new platform similar to Twitter or Facebook, you want to get on that.
