Constructing a building next to a raised walkway offers plenty of opportunities to get creative with circulation and to develop a more intriguing program. The Highline Theater addresses both the streets as its feet and the elevated railroad tracks adjacent that have been converted into a public path and park in the southwest of Manhattan, New York.
Designers Jordan Squires and Morgan Garrard had to begin thinking about how to make the performing arts center more of a tower in order to take advantage of a slim NYC site and to make the most of the multi-level approach. The resultant narrow structure was given extra dimension with its crumpling abstract facades and its irregular broad windows of the upper stories. The Highline Theater houses several halls, including an outdoor venue.
