It's not hard for one to understand why it's important to protect heritage chicken breeds, but very few people are aware of how they can contribute to the preservation, which is why the Heritage Chicken Program in Alberta introduced Adopt-a-Hen to the public.
This initiative started with just a few people and has since grown to more than 500 members. Running from January to September, those that pay a fee of $150 will be contributing to supporting one heritage or vintage chicken, helping farmers preserve the breed. In exchange, members will receive a dozen eggs every two weeks, serving as a reminder of the important cause they're supporting.
The popularity of this program has led to the introduction of educational programs, which teaches locals how to manage and raise their own chickens.
