Researchers are using carbon nanofibers stitched with polymer mesh to make a heart nanopatch that allows nature to heal damaged heart tissue. The heart nanopatch creates a scaffold that heart cells populate to replace dead heart cells with healthy tissue. The carbon nanofibers are key because they help make the electrical connections that the heart needs to keep beating.
The nanotech heart patch is an elastic, durable material that is able to expand and contract in much the same way that natural heart tissue does. Though the Indo-U.S. team of researchers has some tweaking to do, it is optimistic that the nano heart patch will help to repair damaged hearts and prevent second heart attacks that happen because of cardiac muscle weakened from a first attack.
