The Pixel 8 phone has yet to come but some details of the camera app code have been unveiled by developer Kuba Wojciechowski with a new HDR technique. It now appears to be evolving and highlights staggered HDR, which is a method that essentially captures short and long exposures of scenes nearly immediately.
Google currently has HDR Plus Bracketing, which helps users with individual photos in rapid succession and uses this to create a final image with a wide and dynamic range. This means that there is detail in both the shadow and highlighting areas. With a staggered HDR, the short exposure follows the long exposure before it is even complete and the rolling shutter effect scans the sensor all throughout.
