The haute couture aesthetic of Iris van Herpen is unmistakable as the Dutch designer has made quite a name for herself by merging fashion with architecturally inspired motifs and cutting-edge materials. Now, Iris enters her first-ever "full-scale architectural project" as she collaborates with Neutelings Riedijk Architects to deliver "over 1,000 meters of delicate concrete friezes that merge fossil forms with the fabric from [van Herpen's] collections." To create the authenticity of texture for the project, the fashion designer looked at various rock formations and the marble works of sculptors like Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
The collaboration is executed in Leiden, the Netherlands, where the haute couture aesthetic is transferred to architecture to facilitate a striking visual appeal for the Naturalis Biodiversity Center.
