The team at Cologne design studio Aretz Dürr Architektur created the Halle S 46, which is an oversized timber warehouse. It is defined by its cantilevering canopies that are lying on both sides of the structure, located by the town of Altenkirchen. The building is meant for storage for a plethora of furniture workshops under the development of the space.
Aretz explains the design structure, stating "The overhanging timber trusses are not only structurally highly efficient and spatially effective, but are also an essential part of the energy concept. The generous roofs protect the building from the steep summer sun and use the low winter sun as an additional source of energy. They create a smooth transition from inside to outside, both spatially and functionally."
