The rates of obesity across the globe and particularly in the Western world are increasing and the number of gastric bypass surgeries needed are going up with it. As a result, Boston-based company Allurion has created a gastric balloon that works as gastric bypass surgery would, but in a completely non-invasive way.
Called the Elipse, the gastric balloon comes in the form of a pill and inflates the stomach within 15 minutes of being swallowed. The balloon remains in the stomach for four months, after which it opens on its own and is excreted through the digestive system.
The company believes that their product is of much lower risk than other, more invasive forms of gastric bypass. The Elipse is currently available in parts of Europe and the company hopes to receive FDA approval so that it can sell its product within the United States, where obesity rates are at an all-time high.
