Students at the University of Buffalo have launched a brand new gardening club that is dedicated to giving volunteers the opportunity to tend to the university's Campus Garden, which was set up a few years ago to promote sustainable gardening and farming practices.
The UB Campus Garden Club occupies a 20 x 20 foot plot of land that is expected to expand as the gardening club attracts more members. In addition to potentially growing produce that can be utilized by campus dining facilities, the club hopes to espouse the values of urban gardening so as to inspire the next generation of green thumbs to take up the mantle and not simply settle for mass-produced vegetables and fruits.
This gardening club's ambitious mandate could even see it collaborate with off-campus community gardens and farming facilities, and speaks to the unique ability of campus groups to engage with the wider community to promote sustainable and eco-friendly food production and consumption.
