Fused Reality is a new NASA technology that uses a special high-tech headset that combines real flying in real aircraft with overlaid simulations. While there's really no simulator that replaces learning how to fly in an aircraft, the advantage of a simulator is that of course it can enable pilots and trainees to practice navigating dangerous situations without putting themselves at risk of death.
NASA's new Fused Reality technology bridges the best of both worlds. "Fused Reality allows all pilots to learn how to fly difficult and dangerous tasks such as aerial refueling, aircraft carrier landing, formation flight and aerial firefighting, which are usually taught in a ground based flight simulator, by putting the simulator in flight in the actual aircraft," says project manager Bruce Cogan.
