Engagement in a book is quite an intimate activity, but unfortunately, most chairs, sofas and beds are not conducive to providing the ideal ergonomic setup. This project entitled 'Furniture for Reading' establishes a new topography for a joint reading and resting surface.
Caught somewhere between a flat horizontal and a totally vertical backrest, an inclined support best accommodates the ideal posture when holding a paperback. With the help of Patricia Fernandes and Ines Carvalho, Joana Santos designed an unusual perch made up of planes of assorted angles. The edges of each modular square cushion connect to create a continuous surface, enabling the user to sprawl across it on her back, stomach or even in a range of seated positions. One corner of the 'Furniture for Reading' can even be removed and used as a footstool.
