Scientists from Michigan State University (MSU) designed this extremely thin and flexible device, which is capable of turning flags into loudspeakers. The creation generates electrical energy from mechanical or human movement and can also capture vibrations from sound. Known as FENG, the ferroelectret nanogenerator has multiple uses, like being able to power a keyboard, LCD touchscreen and LED light. In the future, it could also lead to voice-activated security patches or even talking newspapers.
Funded by the National Science Foundation, the paper thin FENG fabric consists of an electrically charged silicone wafer made out of eco-friendly elements like silver, polypropylene ferroelecret and polyimide.
The flexible device is an example of a state of the art invention that makes commonplace, everyday items multifunctional.
