This location app is designed to find missing people in emergency situations, even where there is low mobile coverage.
Designed by researchers from Spain's Universidad de Alicante, the new app and device will significantly speed up rescue missions by broadcasting the smartphone's location even if there is no signal. The system's creator and UA lecturer José Ángel Berná explains "this app needs no mobile coverage and generates a wi-fi signal to ask for help within a range of several kilometers." An antennae-equipped portable receptor connects to the smartphone, enabling rescuers to track and find missing people in emergencies.
The app, which can run for days, could help responders prioritize who to help first when natural disasters and environmental catastrophes hit.
