Mexico-based design studio Esrawe delivers a unique range of dark lighting pieces. The set of lights are created by pouring molten glass over bulged burning wooden shapes. To complete this process, Esrawe taps to Mexican glass manufacturing company Nouvel Limited. The two then creates the lighting collection entitled 'Ethereal,' experimenting with the visual effects of burnt wood infused with molten glass.
Esrawe expresses that the experimentation of these techniques are able to establish new connections between different materials in the way it functions, expresses itself, and results in developments of new symbolism. To actually create the pieces, the design studio clamps a wooden rod in a steel mould, then pours molten glass over it to create a reaction. The high temperature of the glass sets the wood on fire and results in a blackened glass effect. Wooden forms are caved into round shapes to create thin poles with the textured black effect in the middle. Once the darkened glass has cooled off, the wooden mould is removed and la light is placed behind the black frames.
