This Emergency Vehicle Alert System Hijacks Car Radios in Sweden

This emergency vehicle alert system allows ambulances to hijack car radios to better notify drivers. Designed by three KTH Royal Institute of Technology students in Sweden, the EVAM System interrupts FM radio for notification purposes. As cars have better sound proofing, it also makes sirens more difficult to hear on the road. However, as long as the radio is turned on, the system will work even if the driver is listening via bluetooth, CD or radio.

The EVAM System uses voice notifications to interrupt the car's audio and alert drivers of emergency vehicles approaching in the distance. A text message will also appear in the car's dashboard display. The emergency vehicle alert system also corresponds with the speed of traffic. Road tests will begin in the first half of this year in Stockholm.
