Fully Edible Food Packaging

Roza Janusz Uses Scoby as an Alternative to Plastic Take-Out Boxes

'Scoby' — an acronym for 'Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast,' can be created through a fermentation process and it is the main ingredient in Roza Janusz's fully edible food packaging. The ecologically enriching membrane is delicate and thin, actively preventing the influx of oxygen. With a low pH, the innovative alternative is an ideal candidate for dry and semi-dry food storage. In addition, the Scoby material boasts healthy bacteria that is nutritious to both the human gut and the soil in the garden.

The fully edible food packaging is a part of the designer's graduate project at the School of Form in Poznan, Poland. This design-friendly venture provides a clear insight of how whole industries can develop zero-waste product packaging.
