It's hard to improve on perfection, but the 'O Six Hundred' DIY kayak takes an age old-design and gives it a fresh new makeover, with updated materials and an easy-to-follow construction.
Based on a tried-and-true 4,000 year old Inuit boat design, this modern update is described by its creator's Ben Cooper and Andrew Simpson as a redesign that "fits together like IKEA -- without the allen key." That's because this DIY kayak comes ready to assemble and consists of just 30 snap-together pieces that form a plywood frame. Cedar spines are then stretched across to add additional strength and finally a semi-clear, waterproof and tough carbon fabric skin is fitted over the whole thing.
Besides being ready to put together, this ingenious new design means the kayak is also highly portable as well. Weighing in at only 10 kilograms, it can quickly and easily be moved out and onto the water without any of the headaches of a traditional kayak.
