Moog is already a respected maker of synthesizers, iPad apps and effect boxes, but its new DFAM percussion synthesizer is an innovative move in the percussion market. The DFAM, standing for "Drummer From Another Mother," is in many ways a counterpart to the wildly popular Mother-32 semi-modular synth also produced by Moog, with the exception of a heavier emphasis on percussive synthesis. At its core, the DFAM is a monophonic, semi-modular, analog percussion synthesizer, but more importantly it is easy-to-use and extremely well built. By turning any of the knobs, users will be able to create a variety of synthetic percussion sounds.
The DFAM is an amazing addition to the Moog lineup, but according to Steve Dunnington, Moog Music's senior hardware engineer, it is not a drum machine. Dunnington is absolutely correct, as the DFAM is so much more. While designed as a percussion synthesizer, the DFAM is capable of a variety of sounds and can be used in conjunction with multiple instruments to trigger the sounds made by the DFAM percussion synthesizer.
