Hacking Hatchets Floor Design

Der Apparat by Florian Bach is Both Rustic and Modern

Der Apparat by Florian Bach looks like the result of many attempts by Jack Torrence (played by Jack Nicholson in The Shinning) to hack his way into a boarded room.

Compiled of a series of identical hand axes embedded into a hardwood floor, the objects, in their arrangement and multiplicity, become less of a series of obstacles and take on more of an all encompassing floor design. The multiplication of identical everyday objects is reminiscent of Disney's visual interpretation of 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice,' in which Mickey Mouse animates an army of brooms to carry out his mundane chores.

The placement of the axes recalls what one does after chopping wood and lodging the hatchet into a tree stump. This juxtaposition between rustic chores and contemporary art makes for a visually compelling installation.
