Studio TOOJ Designs the Contourage Table Using a Binder Jet Process

Stockholm-based design firm Studio TOOJ presents its latest piece in the form of the Contourage. This is a bright blue table that is made with a wood-grain patterning formed by 3D-printed sand that is pressed through a binder jetting method. It was first presented as a part of Milan Design Week as a part of the studio's Restrained Beauty: The Unseen Layers of Scandinavian Design exhibition. The table is crafted with the help of German manufacturer Sandhelden who is known for the unique process.

Co-founder of Studio TOOJ, Johan Wilén speaks to Dezeen about the design, stating "Binder jetting is an additive manufacturing process in which a liquid binder is selectively applied to bond powder particles. Material layers are then connected to an object. The print head allows binders to be strategically applied to the powder. The job box lowers and another layer of powder is then spread and binders are added. Over time, the object builds up through the layering of powder and binder."
