Community-Building Art Festivals

The KULTURA Art Festival Featured Traditional Filipino Artworks

The Kapisana Philippine Art & Culture Centre is in the middle of putting on a weekend-long celebration of Filipino culture, featuring some incredible community-building art, culinary competitions and traditional Filipino music performances.

Trend Hunter TV was lucky enough to attend the KULTURA festival's first event, which consisted of creating a traditional Filipino hut using drawings depicting different people's ideas of the word "home." Artist Tim Manalo, along with two other artists, helped create this hut and spent the day encouraging others to add their drawings to the hut's walls. This type of hut is often used in the Philippines as a portable home, Manalo explained. During a flood, or when the surrounding land needs, villages would come together to move these huts to a different location, demonstrating an unshakable community bond.

Manalo and the KULTURA festival re-created this hut to evoke once again the feeling of community, hoping to encourage bonding within the Regent Park Filipino community.

The KULTURA festival will continue from Friday to Sunday, featuring food, music, art, and family fun -- it's not to be missed!
