Technology company Sita developed the Common-Use Beacon Registry, a program that allows airlines to share the use of Bluetooth low-energy (BLE) beacons installed in airports.
Airports around the world -- in North America, Europe, the Middle East and the Far East -- are beginning to embrace BLE technology that allows travelers to access a wide variety of location-based and guidance services from their mobile devices. The technology allows airlines to provide passengers with directions, walk times to their departure gates, lounge access and pertinent alerts and offers.
The Common-Use Beacon Registry gives airports the opportunity to share the meta deta -- precise location such as information on gates, terminals and so on -- with airlines and other partners, giving passengers instant access to the most accurate, relevant and pertinent information.
