The 'Cloud Pavilion' is a structure on the banks of Shanghai's Huangpu River designed by Shmidt Hammer Lassen Architects, a Danish firm. The dazzling structure is a rectangular pavilion ensconced in thin chrome sheets of metal and a curvaceous bubble of glass.
The Cloud Pavilion's mirrored metal columns, as well as the polished aluminum that covers the ceiling, will attracted passersby from a distance, but the building gains its name from the glass on the inside. The curving inner room's outline traces the pattern of a cartoon cloud, like those taught to preschoolers in art class. In the evening, a diffused light that covers the entirety of the glass room's ceiling is turned on, creating the image of a bright white cloud against the night sky.
