Chairs that have been manufactured to the same configuration as the Cloth Cantilever usually expose a much more rigid quality. The most effective way to make one of these cantilevered chairs is by the use of tubular steel, a folded sheet of metal or a panel of stiff bent plywood, and these materials are generally uncovered.
Yet here we have seat that expresses an atypical softness. Designer Kathleen Niederhauser covered the firm structure of her chair with several layers of fabric and possibly additional padding. Using eight slender straps, she bound the textiles around the crooked form, blanketing even the base and the underside of the Cloth Cantilever chair. The final product is honest and unexpected.
