Miya Ando's Installation is Titled 'Flower Atlas'

Artist Miya Ando has developed a series of cloth calendars that hang in New York City's Brookfield Place Mall. Titled 'Flower Atlas,' this installation boasts 72 cloth banners and besides being visually interesting, the hanging objects " draw attention to the shift in traditional Japanese seasons created by climate change."

Each one of Miya Ando's banners represents one of the 72 seasons in the Japanese Kō calendar, which breaks the year into seasons of approximately five days each. As the name might suggest, the installation is floral-themed. The cloth calendar display flowers that bloom for just one day during the Japanese "micro seasons."

Ando's intention for 'Floral Atlas' was to create a welcoming and awareness-raising environment that allows people to walk through a calendar and experience an alternative, nature-based system of time.
