Thanks to two Canadian engineers, a reinvented chin strap could be used to generate enough energy to power a hearing aid for two hours. Conceived by Aidin Delnavaz and his colleague Jeremie Voix of the École de Technologie Superieure, the adjusted industrial ear muffs were able to generate some electrical wattage just from chewing gum for a couple minutes. It is theorized that if worn while eating a meal, the chin strap could power a small device.
Published in a Smart Materials and Structures article, their concept of mouth power is just one example of kinetic energy being used to power electronic devices. Its creators envision usage for professionals requiring a helmet, such as fire fighters using bluetooth.
