Wallpaper magazine commissioned designer Martino Gamper to create a modern-day Chair Arch as an installation for the London Design Festival. After his exhibition ‘100 Chairs in 100 Days’ Wallpaper.com felt that Gamper was the perfect person to erect the contemporary chair arch.
Using Ercol stacking chairs as his building blocks, Gamper built two overlapping arches in the courtyard of the Victoria & Albert Museum. A Chair arch, was part of a British Victorian tradition. The chair arch was constructed to commemorate special occasions. This particular one was inspired by a similar one constructed in 1877 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s visit to High Wycombe.
