Concrete Mythical Creatures

Yang Yongliang's Cement Dragon Pays Homage to Chinese Culture

The Cement Dragon is a stunning interpretation of the devastatingly beautiful mythical creature. As its name gives away, it has been sculpted using a concrete mixture. Created to look as though it is bursting through the wall, it almost looks like it met the gaze of another mythical creature when it reached the other side: Medusa.

Conceived by Chinese artist Yang Yongliang, the Cement Dragon pays homage to his native land in two ways. The first lies with the dragon itself. Long has it been a symbol of peace, prosperity and power in China. Yongliang writes, "My original intention was to expose its status in an abnormal way. I wanted to ask the viewer to examine our current society and our living environment." The second involves the medium used, which represents China's rapid development.
