Parasite-Finding Smartphone Microscopes

The Cellscope Scans Blood for Parasitic Worms in Minutes

The Cellscope Loa is the latest iteration of a mobile phone attachment, developed by researchers at the University of California Berkeley, that acts as a clinical-grade microscope.

The Loa consists of a 3D-printed plastic base outfitted with LED lights, microcontrollers, gears and a USB port. A smartphone can be slid into the base, which can be loaded with a single drop of blood to give rise to sample analysis in just two minutes.

The device runs the sample in front of the smartphone's camera to create a video. An algorithm then processes the footage, searching for worms on the screen and displaying the worm count on the screen. The resulting video allows for fast and accurate diagnosis.

This device is the first to combine imaging technology with software and hardware automation to give rise to a truly comprehensive diagnostic solution.
