Laboratory Coffee Houses

Café Coutume Aoyama is Inspired by Science

The studio behind Coutume Cafe in Paris, CUT Architectures, is back with its design for Tokyo’s Café Coutume Aoyama.

The design is modeled to resemble a science lab, complete with a white-lacquered ceiling grid, lighted plants and tiled surfaces that line the lower half of the walls and serving counter. The coffee counter is illuminated by the square LED panels situated above. The rest of the interior is decorated with coffee and science collectibles; for instance, the glass coffee beakers which are displayed on the front counter.

The architects explain, "Our aim was to keep the strong identity we created for the Coutume brand while adapting it to the Tokyo location. At the crossing between a Parisian coffee shop and a laboratory, Café Coutume Aoyama offers a two sided space."
