Transformative Burlesque Photography

Sean Scheidt Captures Before and After of Sensual Performers

When people think of burlesque, they probably think of the timeless elegance of Dita Von Teese; yet this series of burlesque photography shows that such performers often adopt more of an alter ego when up on stage. Drastically different in these before and after images, the transformations captured for the Burlesque photo series are eye-opening.

Shot by photographer Sean Scheidt, the Burlesque photo series essentially captures the power of makeup, costume, props and attitude. Scheidt says, "I use basic lighting and a black backdrop. Black is emptiness. You place a person there and they are who they are. The interview process is really as much about getting the person comfortable as it is about getting to know them. As the shoot progresses, they transform into the persona they portray on stage. I do ask them, ‘What defines you on stage’ but otherwise try to stay back and let the narrative develop."
