Cartoon-Inspired Murals

This Brooklyn Street Artist Pays Homage to a Favorite 90s Show

Brooklyn street artist Owen Dippie created a giant, outdoor tribute to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with a clever twist. Rather than painting the famous turtles themselves, Dippie made a fantastic mural of the Renaissance artists the four protagonists are named after: Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo and Donatello. The renowned painters are wearing the cartoon turtles' signature masks. The Brooklyn street artist chose a brick wall in a Bushwick train yard as his larger-than-life canvas.

While street art inspired by popular cartoons is certainly not a new phenomenon, Dippie made the unusual and innovative choice to play on the theme of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles instead of simply replicating the art of the cartoon. The creative decision to paint the masks in color against the black and white of the artists' faces makes the visual pun truly pop.
