This surreal cafe installation can be found at the entrance to the Faculty of Medicine Experimental Research Building at the University of Tokyo. This work by Torafu Architects is called ‘Boolean’ and was originally intended to be a simple waiting room with a vending machine, using stone as the predominant surface.
That original plan was a bit austere, so Torafu Architects installed two L-shaped wooden objects at different orientations to create a partition that doubles as a bench. They cut circles into the partition to create the illusion of floating spheres while simultaneously warming up the space and providing a more pleasant atmosphere.
