Victorian Dandy Depictions

These Illustrations by Anna and Elena Balbusso Retell a Classic Period

These bookish illustrations from Italian illustrating twin team Anna and Elena Balbusso have just won an award for their illustrious romanticism. The images are from a reproduction of a classic book by romantic Russian poet Alexander Pushkin.

The book ‘Eugene Onegin’ tells a tale of a shy, bookish young woman who has fallen in love with a high-rolling socialite dandy. The bookish illustrations are decidedly old school and hark back to the era of elaborately illustrated children’s fairy tales.

The illustrating duo work and live in Milan, Italy. Their work has been featured in publications all around the world and their art has taken the sisters from Italy to Canada, France, the UK and Korea. The twins graduated from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Italy 15 years ago where they specialized in painting.
