We've seen a number of clever robot designs at Trend Hunter, but none have had the circus-ready abilities of the BallIP robot designed by Dr. Masaaki Kumagai and his team at the Robot Development Engineering Laboratory of Tohoku Gakuin University in Japan.
The BallIP robot's name is short for Ball Inverted Pendulum, which refers to the gyroscopes and accelerometers used for the BallIP robot's movement.
Implications - The featured video shows off the robot's skills as it balances on top of a ball. The person within the video places both wood and a cement block on top of the robot, but it never falls off its perch. The robot can turn in any direction because of the ball it is balanced on.
