The Balenciaga 2023 runway, which showcased the iconic high fashion brand's Spring/Summer collection, stunned audiences and the world with its unexpected aesthetic. The runway was entirely filled with mud—a total of 275 cubic meters—and models had to tread through the dystopian-like space, showcasing the brand's new futuristic designs.
The mud-filled Balenciaga 2023 runway was designed by Spanish artist Santiago Sierra and built in collaboration with architecture studio Sub. The show took place in the Parc des Expositions de Villepinte convention center in Paris.
This is not the first time Santiago Sierra used mud as a primary material. The artist is well-known for the 2005 installation at the Kestnergesellschaft art museum in Hanover. Called House in Mud, this creative experience also saw two rooms of the institution being filled with mud and peat
