Optimus Ride, the autonomous shuttle service, is launching in New York City. The company will roll out the service beginning with six self-driving shuttles located in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The autonomous shuttle service can be accessed on private roads, which means the company does not rely on the DMV to sign off on the technology. The company plans to launch its services at other locations including Fairfield, California as well as Virginia and Boston.
The New York City service will take people from the ferry stop to Flushing Avenue. The shuttle will be available to customers from 7:00 am up until 10:30 pm. A software engineer and a safety driver will be present for rides, to ensure safety. The company is anticipating a rate of 500 passengers per day, and 16,000 a month.
