German automaker Audi has announced its support for Travolution, a German traffic light communication management system that effectively reduces traffic congestion.
In Audi's home town of Ingolstadt, 46 Travolution traffic lights communicate with specially-equipped Audi A5s and A6s. The cars then display the optimal speed for the driver to maintain in order to sail through green lights rather than encountering red lights. In addition, the 'smart' lights interpret traffic density and adjust the timing of red and green lights accordingly to reduce time spent at red lights and thereby minimize stop-and-start traffic.

Audi Backs Travolution to Reduce Congestion
Trend Themes
1. Smart Traffic Lights - The incorporation of communication management systems in traffic lights could lead to uninterrupted flow of vehicles and reduce congestion.
2. Connected Vehicles - Vehicle connectivity with traffic light systems could help drivers navigate roads more efficiently and reduce time spent at red lights.
3. Data-driven Traffic Management - Traffic management systems that use real-time data to adjust traffic light timing could lead to a reduction in stop-and-start traffic.
Industry Implications
1. Automotive - Automakers could potentially incorporate traffic light communication management systems in their vehicles to help drivers navigate congested roads.
2. Smart Cities - Smart cities could benefit from implementing data-driven traffic management systems that optimize traffic flow and reduce congestion.
3. Transportation Infrastructure - Traffic light communication and data management systems could improve the effectiveness of transportation infrastructure and reduce traffic congestion.
